10 Lake property owners had TLEA’s LakeSmart volunteers visit their property and received a free, written, no-obligation recommendation of how to deal with erosion or runoff issues. This was our 6th year conducting LakeSmart evaluations on properties around Thompson Lake. This year the team completed 10 property evaluations and was able to award 3 properties the LakeSmart award. A LakeSmart Award is a recognition given to waterfront property owners in Maine who manage and landscape their land in a way that protects and preserves lake water quality. To date we have completed 140 evaluations, which puts us as one of the most active LakeSmart teams in Maine.
LakeSmart is a free and non-regulatory program that trains volunteers to evaluate lake properties for signs of erosion. We look for erosion in 5 major areas, driveway and parking areas, outdoor structures, outdoor areas, shore buffer and buffer integrity. The homeowners receive a written evaluation with suggestions to better control erosion and storm water runoff. Properties that protect the lake and meet LakeSmart standards earn the coveted LakeSmart Award, consisting of two distinctive signs that can be posted at the waterfront and driveway. The signs identify the homes of good stewards and show everyone what lake-friendly living looks like.
